Mad Max: Fury Road surprising received 10 Oscar nominations when the announcement was made on Thursday (13.01.16)

'Mad Max: Fury Road' received an impressive 10 nominations at the 88th Academy Awards.

The post-apocalyptic action film - which stars Charlize Theron as Imperator Furiosa alongside Tom Hardy's Max Rockatansky - has received nods for Best Picture and Best Director for George Miller, as well as Best Film Editing, Best Production Design and Best Cinematography among others.

It's a huge haul for the film, which features a drawn out car chase across the desert for much of its running time and little dialogue, however, its cast notably missed out on any nods for their performances.

Elsewhere, the 'Star Wars' franchise continued its disappointing run at the Oscars with few nominations in the top categories at the ceremony, which will be held at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles on February 28, 2016.

The biggest movie of 2015, 'Star Wars: The Force Awakens' was recognised in five technical categories but was snubbed for Best Picture.

'The Revenant' leads the way with 12 nominations.

Leading man Leonardo DiCaprio will vie for Best Actor, Alejandro G Inarritu is up for Best Director and Tom Hardy has been nominated for Best Supporting Actor.

'The Martian' also did well with seven nominations, including Best Picture and Best Actor for its star Matt Damon.

Hardy will battle Christian Bale, Mark Ruffalo, Sylvester Stallone and Mark Rylance for Best Supporting Actor.

Damon and DiCaprio will compete with Bryan Cranston, Michael Fassbender and Eddie Redmayne for Best Actor.

And the Best Actress category sees Cate Blanchett, Brie Larson, Jennifer Lawrence, Saoirse Ronan and Charlotte Rampling - who receives her first ever nomination - compete for the prize.

Reluctant hero Max (Hardy) is drawn into helping Imperator Furiosa (Theron, excellent), who's liberated a group of sexually enslaved women and is being pursued for her trouble by the grotesque Immortan Joe (Keays-Byrne). Precision-executed lunacy, a brilliantly feminist 'western on wheels' with a generous helping of heart.
