Independent markets in Edinburgh and Glasgow to help you avoid all this Black Friday nonsense
Black Friday: a day to pick up a slightly discounted electrical item from a large store chain, while a frantic stranger elbows you in the ribcage in their miserly attempt to pluck the thing from your cold, consumer-driven hands.
If that doesn't sound like your idea of a rip-roaring good time, but you still need to pick up some bits for Christmas, we reckon independent markets are a good shout. You've always wanted a pair of hand-knitted mittens and a personalised ceramic candle holder, right?
The Reap and Sew Market
This place has a pun in the title, which makes it automatically good. It is a not-for-profit, curated indie market, showcasing everything from festive food to crafts and gifts. It also raises money for local charities, and is an all-round good egg.
Sat 28 Nov, Re:Hope Church, Glasgow, 11am–3pm, free
Christmas at Candleriggs
A festive market with over 20 stalls and a selection of funfair rides. There's a bar too, in case you need some warm cider to help you mull over your purchases.
Until Thu 24 Dec, Candleriggs, Glasgow, 11am–10pm, free
Out of the Blue Flea Market
This place is full of all kinds of secondhand things, such as clothes, jewellery and general bric-a-brac, because not all gifts have to come with plastic wrapping and a stringently applied security tag, you know.
Sat 28 Nov, Out of the Blue Drill Hall, Edinburgh, 10am–3pm, free
The Real Scottish Fair
Get all Caledonian this Christmas, at this fair with traditional Scottish music and samples of food and drink while you shop.
Until Thu 24 Dec, Ocean Terminal, Edinburgh, 10am–6pm, free
Glasgow Christmas Market
This one's pretty obvious: it's that massive festive market that returns year-on-year to St Enoch Square. But come on, it's full of lovely, pretty things and bonus: you can neck some Glühwein as you peruse.
Until Sun 20 Dec, St Enoch Square, Glasgow, times tbc, free
European Christmas Market
Edinburgh's own Christmas market is pretty much the same deal: browse some stalls, eat some bratwurst, have a lovely time.
Until Mon 4 Jan, East Princes Street Gardens, Edinburgh, times vary, free
