Resonate: Total Gaming eSports and gaming festival coming to the SECC
Scotland's first eSports and gaming festival to take place in Glasgow next year
This article is from 2015.
Scotland's first ever eSports and gaming festival will take place at the SECC, Glasgow from Fri 29–Sun 31 July 2016.
The festival will be organised in association with Gfinity, a company set up in 2013 to help push eSports and promote the talents of UK gamers.
Resonate will play host to an as-yet unannounced eSports tournament, a 'junior gamer zone', a play hall and a retail zone, where gamers will be able to compete with each other and mix with various YouTube personalities.
Once derided as a fad that wouldn't gain traction out of the Far East, the worldwide eSports scene has grown enormously in recent years. Festivals like Dreamhack host tournaments for the most popular competitive games, including Counter-Strike: Global Offensive, League of Legends, Hearthstone and Heroes of the Storm.
The prize money can be significant; in 2015 Valve's annual Dota 2 competition – The International – awarded the winning team (Evil Geniuses) over $6 million from a prize pool of over $18 million, the vast majority of which was raised by ordinary players stumping up cash for cosmetic in-game items. That's winnings of over $1.2 million per player.
Resonate: Total Gaming runs from Fri 29–Sun 31 July 2016.
