WWE NXT UK tour to hit SSE Hydro and SSE Wembley
Superstars and Divas of pro wrestling in first UK appearances
Glasgow, prepare yourself for the sounds of bulldogs, diving hurricanranas, frankensteiners and a good old-fashioned suicide somersault senton: the stars of WWE NXT are coming to the UK for a seven-date tour this autumn.
In the carefully-scripted world of pro wrestling, the storyline behind NXT is that it's a kind of reality show seeking new talent, the wrestlers being generally younger, hungrier and edgier than more established stars. The result is proving more popular than WWE's main roster, with many viewers feeling that the NXT team are just trying harder than anyone else to give the audience a good time. At the moment, the tour is planned to feature Samoa Joe, Bayley, Tyler Breeze, Dana Brooke, Emma and others, but this may change.
One wrestler for whom the tour represents a sort of homecoming is Finn Balor, aka Fergal Devitt, the 34-year-old Irishman who is currently NXT Champion. Devitt trained in the UK as a teenager before becoming a wrestling star in Japan, where his aggressive style got a lot of attention. He signed with WWE last year, adopting the ring name Finn Balor after two characters in Irish mythology, the legendary hero Fionn mac Cumhaill and the malevolent giant Balor, which in the context of Irish mythology is a little like naming yourself Aragorn Sauron, but we're not going to argue with a man who can convincingly take on someone 70lbs heavier than himself. (Namely, Quebecois wrestler Kevin Owens, from whom Devitt won the NXT championship in July of this year.)
On behalf of the other NXT wrestlers, he expressed his excitement at the prospect of performing in the UK, saying 'I look forward to the opportunity to return to where I started my career, giving fans new memories that they will never forget.' We promise not to forget them, just as long as he doesn't give us one of those flying double foot stomps of his.
Tickets go on sale Fri 28 Aug at 9am.
WWE NXT is at SSE Hydro, Glasgow on Fri 11 Dec, 2015, and SSE Wembley Wed 16 Dec.
