Benga - Diary of an Afro Warrior
Despite the rise of dubstep’s profile recently you still have to sift around to find the good stuff. One gold nugget is Beni Uthman aka Benga, the old skool kid on the block who, since age 16, has been showing many how it’s done.
For this much anticipated album Uthman moves away from familiar dubstep manoeuvres, drawing influence from the likes of electro, jazz and Detroit techno. The result is a softer, more soulful production, showing a desire to innovate over simple dancefloor acceptance. That said, he still delivers an album full of jaw-dropping basslines in true rude boy style. It’s not one for the purists but Diary . . . indicates crossover potential, and what else is to come from a young and exciting talent.
