Estelle - Shine
- Mark Robertson
- 27 March 2008
Estelle has paid her dues on the UK R&B circles before departing stateside. A meeting with US R&B star John Legend led to her signing to his Homeschool stable and this, her second album is executive produced by Legend.
The list of serious muscle in the production seat – Mark Ronson Black Eyed Peas’ Will.i.am, Swizz Beatz and Kanye West, Wycliffe Jean – would suggest stakes (and hopes) are high for this precocious, but charming vocal talent from west London. Less corny or contrived than many pop contemporaries, Estelle’s languid delivery and warm, sunshiny tones to her voice makes this chunk of summery funk. She successfully mashes up loose reggae pop with jittery R&B robotics and bumping hip hop while never losing her English twang.
