Arthurs.Høiby.Ritchie - Explications

The Ritchie in this triumvirate is Scottish drummer Stu, and his work with the likes of Colin Steele and the excellent Trianglehead will mean he needs no further introduction in these parts. Anyone who has followed the more esoteric directions being explored on the London jazz scene is equally likely to have come across the work of trumpeter Tom Arthurs, while bassist Jasper Høiby is an associate of the F-IRE Collective.
This is the trio’s debut recording, and builds on the lines of enquiry explored in their UK tour in late 2006. Spare, even skeletal harmonic and rhythmic frameworks support their probing, fractured experiments with instrumental timbre and on-the-wing group interaction. It is an open-minded and inventive approach to jazz improvisation and interplay that offers plenty to absorb the listener, although probably not for those who insist on swing at the heart of their jazz experience.
