The Raconteurs to release surprise album
Consolers of the Lonely out on 24 March
The Raconteurs, the brainchild of The White Stripes’ Jack White and his rock’n’roll best buddy Brendan Benson, have announced that their new album, Consolers of the Lonely, will be released on Monday 24 March.
White is well known for his idiosyncratic take on the music industry and the band have refused to do interviews or place any ads in the press prior to the release of the record.
It will be available in all formats - vinyl, CD and digital - simultaneously.
There was a definite strategy behind the announcement with less than a week’s notice. The band’s label Third Man and XL Recordings issued a statement explaining the plan.
‘The band wanted to get the album to the fans as soon as possible and as we promised. We wanted to get this record to fans, the press, radio, etc. all at the EXACT SAME TIME so that no one has an upper hand on anyone else regarding its availability, reception or perception.
‘We wanted to explore the idea of releasing an album everywhere at once and THEN marketing and promoting it thereafter. The Raconteurs would rather this release not be defined by its first weeks sales, pre-release promotion, or by someone defining it FOR YOU before you get to hear it.’
White and co were also careful to state that the release was not a reaction to the record being leaked onto the internet, but their label said: ‘The actual worst thing about a leak is the usual poor sound quality, akin to watching a movie on a wristwatch instead of in a theatre, which, for the album’s creators is a bit of a letdown, but again, it is completely up to the listener.’
The band plan to post a video for the first single from the album ‘Salute Your Solution’ on their website on the 25 March provided, they say, they get it edited in time.
