Paul Bettany's angel role
Paul Bettany will play an archangel who battles God in a new supernatural thriller.
The British actor has landed the lead role in 'Legion', which follows what happens when God loses faith in humanity and sends on army of heavenly beings to Earth to wipe out mankind.
Mankind's only hope is a group of misfits who seek refuge in a diner in the desert aided by their new ally, Bettany's character Archangel Michael - who Biblically is presented as the field commander of the Army of God.
The movie will also star 'Juno' actress Olivia Thirlby and marks the feature directorial debut of Scott Stewart.
Filming is set to begin in New Mexico later this month.
Bettany - who met his future wife Jennifer Connelly on the set of 'A Beautiful Mind' - is no stranger to religious roles.
He played a devout Opus Dei monk called Silas in the 2006 movie 'The Da Vinci Code'.
The 36-year-old actor is currently filming 'The Secret Life of Bees' and will next be seen in period drama 'The Young Victoria' alongside Emily Blunt.
