The best places to nab a nip in the city on Saturday 16 May
Are you sitting comfortably? Because we’re about to bust a myth: you don’t have to be in Scotland to enjoy a whisky or two. The water of life tastes just as good in London as it does north of the border, and since the 16 May is World Whisky Day, we’ve rounded-up some of the best places for you to enjoy a tasting of the good stuff.
The Scotch Malt Whisky Society
The first rule of the Scotch Malt Whisky Society is that you don’t talk about the Scotch Malt Whisky Society. Unless, of course, you’re talking about how to nose a dram and all that, in which case it’s perfectly acceptable. This year, their WWD event offers you the chance to sample single cask and single malt whiskies, which let’s face it, should make for a singularly good time.
The Scotch Malt Whisky Society, Greville Street, 12–9pm.
Dingle Whisky Bar
You may not have guessed it from the name, but this bar serves whisky, and a lot of it. To celebrate this annual event, the Dingle are dangling the opportunity to win a bottle of whisky, and if you don’t win, you can always commiserate with one of their whisky-based cocktails.
The Dingle Whisky Bar, Maiden Lane, 4pm–12am.
Opium Cocktail & Dim Sum Parlour
Down in Chinatown, premium speakeasy Opium has joined up with Nikka Whisky – a brand from Japan – and limited edition drinks will be served up by Head of Drinks, Bruce Govia.
Opium Cocktail & Dim Sum Parlour, Gerrard Street, 5pm–3am.
Salt Whisky Bar and Dining Room
No, salt isn’t just for tequila. If you’re looking for something more than a tumbler full of Famous Grouse, this place has over 200 varieties of whisky on offer, plus a shisha patio for after (if you can brave the great outdoors, that is).
Salt Whisky Bar and Dining Room, Seymour Street, 12pm–1am.
Boisdale Canary Wharf
If swirling around a glass of the good stuff makes you feel like you’re in the Great Gatsby, then this is the place for you. As well as their selection of over 400 whisky varieties, you can groove with some jazz cats as you listen to some seriously hip tunes. You dig me?
Boisdale Canary Wharf, Cabot Hall, 6pm–12am.
World Whisky Day takes place on Sat 16 May, worldwide (but you got that, right?)
