The West Coast of Scotland meets the West Coast of America here, as Glasgow’s Chemikal Underground provide a UK release for the latest album by this LA psych-balladeering outfit.
It’s really quite lovely too. Jim Putnam (son of recording pioneer Bill Putnam) provides us with a warm and likeable lesson in how to recreate the best of psychedelic pop in 12 easy steps. Songs like ‘Brother Rabbit’, ‘When the Cold Air Goes to Sleep’ and ‘Lake Life’ evoke Pink Floyd, George Harrison’s All Things Must Pass and Gene Clark’s No Other, while Putnam’s dreamily lazy, effect-swirled falsetto recreates an old-fashioned kind of ambient sound.
