New on Netflix UK and MUBI: May 2015
Serial Mom, Cold Fish, Fast & Furious 6 and Drive all coming to VOD next month
Netflix have added ‘Pope of Trash’ John Waters’ skewering of suburban America, Serial Mom. Kathleen Turner is marvellous and mischievous as a mother who turns into one of America’s most wanted when she goes on a killing spree. It’s one of her best performances. Especially hilarious are her dirty, prank phone calls. It has a lot in common with Marjane Satrapi’s The Voices.
Fans of 1980s feminist comedy Nine to Five may be excited to hear about the reunion of two of its leading ladies, Jane Fonda and Lily Tomlin, who have been given their own original Netflix series, Grace and Frankie. The pair star as two women whose lives are suddenly turned upside down when their husbands reveal they are gay and leave them for each other. It premieres on 8 May.
Whilst on the subject of marital issues, The One I Love is also available on Netflix. Mark Duplass and Elisabeth Moss star as a couple who head off on a weekend break as a last ditch attempt to save their relationship. The result is a witty and emotionally astute mash-up of Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf? and The Twilight Zone.
With Sion Sono’s rap battle epic Tokyo Tribe due to be released in the UK in May it’s worth catching up with his brutal, gory and extremely unsettling serial killer drama Cold Fish which is now showing on MUBI. It’s based on a real life case and is a great example of Sono’s wild and relentless style of filmmaking.
If you enjoyed Ruben Östlund’s Force Majeure, then you should check out his second feature, Involuntary, which scrupulously picks apart pack mentality in a truly uncomfortable manner. Also available on MUBI.
