BBC One period drama 'Poldark' has been recommissioned for a second series after proving to be a hit with viewers

'Poldark' will return for a second series.

The BBC has commissioned another series of the popular period drama after the first eight-episode run became a hit with audiences, averaging 8.1 million viewers.

Charlotte Moore, Controller of BBC One, told the Daily Mirror newspaper: "I can exclusively announce that Sunday night's new phenomenon 'Poldark' that has captured the nation's hearts has been commissioned for a second series."

Cast members Aidan Turner, 31, and Eleanor Tomlinson, 22, will reprise their roles as lovers Ross Poldark and Demelza in the second series, which will continue to be based on novels written by Winston Graham, of which there are 12 in total.

Charlotte continued: "Aidan Turner will return as Ross Poldark and Eleanor Tomlinson as Demelza in a new eight-part series written by Debbie Horsfield that will cover books three and four of Winston Graham's series."

The first series of the drama will conclude later this month, but the BBC is eager for work to begin on the next set of episodes, with filming expected to commence in Cornwall in September now Aidan has confirmed he will return.

A show insider previously said: "Aidan has become a huge hit with viewers. The role of Ross Poldark has put him in the shop window and movie makers from Hollywood will be beating down his door.

"Without Aidan there is no 'Poldark'. He can name his price. There is a real feeling it could turn into a long-running series."
