You don’t need to travel the length of Scotland to enjoy the Outlander experience
**Warning: Outlander spoilers ahead**
Time travellers, leave your stone circles at home: now, you don’t even need to leave Edinburgh to immerse yourself in the world of Outlander.
Capitalising on the booming demand for all things related to the hit book-turned-TV series, Mercat Tours has launched the Edinburgh Outlander Experience.
While it’s still early days in the TV show, broadcast in the UK on Amazon Prime, Edinburgh plays a big role across the eight instalments (so far) of Diana Gabaldon’s books. The story begins in the 1940s, where Claire Randall is enjoying a second honeymoon in the Highlands; when visiting a stone circle, she falls through a time portal and finds herself in Jacobite-era Scotland, where she marries and falls in love with Jamie Fraser.
On the two hour tour, guides will whisk you back to the mid-18th century where Claire and Jamie found themselves at the heart of the Jacobite uprisings and its aftermath. Visitors will encounter the Canongate Kirk, where Colum MacKenzie meets Claire and Jamie, and the Palace of Holyroodhouse, where Claire and Jamie wait on Bonnie Prince Charlie.
From there it’s on to Holyrood Abbey, where Black Jack pleads for Claire’s help to nurse his brother, the site of the Tolbooth Jail, where the Fraser men of Lallybroch are imprisoned for desertion and The World’s End tavern, Dougal MacKenzie’s favourite haunt.
You’ll also hear stories of witchcraft, Jacobites, Royal Stuarts, curses, clans and how the fictional story of Jamie and Claire intermingles with the true history.
‘Claire and Jamie have captured the imagination of people across the world and Scotland’s stunning landscape is a breathtaking backdrop to their adventures,’ says Kat Brogan, Managing Director of Mercat Tours. ‘We’re delighted to reveal the sites featured in the historical drama and share the true stories of turmoil and romance during the Jacobite rebellion.’
The Edinburgh Outlander Experience takes place at 11am every Saturday from April to October, starting at Mercat Cross, High Street and finishing Canongate Kirkyard.
Outlander has been renewed for a second season in the US, and new episodes from season one can been seen on Amazon Prime.
