OK, give me the brief Hospital Records was started by Tony Colman and Chris Goss back in 1996. Today it has grown to be one of the most successful independent labels in the country with a healthy roster of acclaimed artists, a string of impressive releases and a club night that has been ripping it up from Brighton to the Balearics.
But why are they so damn popular? Essentially a drum & bass label, Hospital has a reputation for releasing music that encompasses a wide range of different styles; this has gained them a fan base that appeals way beyond the hardcore D&B heads. Both Colman and Goss, who produced under the label’s London Elektricity moniker, came from a background of soul and jazz and their musical roots have grown into the modern Hospital sound.
Who are the main players? With an ear for quality, Hospital have picked up on some of the freshest talent on offer, most notably High Contrast (pictured) who made a huge impact when he burst onto the scene in 2002 with debut album True Colours. Since then the Welshman has gone on to release some amazing music, has recorded a massively popular Essential Mix and has even found time to squeeze out a notorious bootleg of Kanye West’s ‘Gold Digger.’
Anyone else heading along? Yep. Celebrating the release of his new LP, Reality Checkpoint, producer Logistics is known for consistent quality and there has been no dip in form with ‘Slow Motion’ and ‘Lullaby’ currently hitting home with style. Meanwhile, Cyantific have a strong underground following and a fierce rep for some serious skills behind the decks. Finally, no Hospital night would be complete without MC Wrec serving up some lyrical treats to accompany the evening’s entertainment.
