As the new trailer hits the web, HBO announces that Season 5 will simulcast in 170 countries
As we draw nearer and nearer to the official launch of Game of Thrones Season 5, the latest trailer, ‘The Wheel’, has hit the interweb to whet your appetite. Daenerys Targaryen (Emilia Clarke) continues to build her armies preparing for a power grab; Tyrion Lannister (Peter Dinklage) is in exile, while the Starks are scattered across Westeros. Add dragons, scary men in metal masks and a huge crumbling pyramid and we’re officially hooked.
In other Thrones news, HBO has announced that season five will broadcast simultaneously across 170 countries. Their logic is twofold: firstly, it should help stamp out pirating. The time lag meant that some impatient fans were turning to illegal streams to feed their fix, rather than waiting for their local network to catch up with the US. Secondly, it’ll prevent spoilers for the most eager enthusiasts, so they can start chattering online as soon as each episode hits – and with the ever mounting bodycount over the last four series, and the news that future seasons will diverge even further from George RR Martin’s novels, GoT is surely the most spoilerific TV show of all time.
However, Sky Atlantic hasn’t currently signed up to the broadcast deal, tweeting that ‘we will premiere each episode at 9pm Monday so fans can watch, enjoy and discuss the show together’, a move which will force UK fans to wait hours for their GoT fix. However, an online fan petition has sprung up asking them to reconsider.
Remember winter is coming … and we can’t wait.
Game of Thrones premieres on Sky Atlantic, Mon 13 Apr, 9pm.
