New musical The Get Down will be shown exclusively on the online streaming site
Baz Luhrmann has become the latest in a line of directors to embrace online streaming as he announced his plans for a new musical to be shown exclusively on Netflix.
Luhrmann, whose best-known films include Romeo + Juliet, Australia and The Great Gatsby will direct the first two episodes and the finale of The Get Down, a 13-part musical drama. The Get Down will centre around a group of teenagers from beaten up, broken down South Bronx who find hope and inspiration in their musical talents.
Set to a soundtrack of retro disco, hip hop and punk, the show will also feature documentary footage of New York during that time, portraying the city as simultaneously destitute, downtrodden and an explosion of block parties and breakdance.
Luhrmann's wife, Catherine Martin, is on board to work on the programme's visual aspects, which are said to take their inspiration from Luhrmann's other musical, the flamboyant Moulin Rouge.
The Get Down is touted to premiere in 2016
