On the public face of it, ex-Arab Strapper Malcolm Middleton may not be getting any happier, but it’s difficult to come away from one of his collections without wiping a grin off your face while the inevitable tear dampens your cheek.
His lauded Christmas tune ‘We’re All Going to Die’ may have concluded in more of a publicity machine victory than a bona fide chart success, but he’s put all that behind him and struck it lucky on Sleight of Heart, an admittedly familiar yet gloriously haunting array of original mourn-friendly numbers with a sprinkling of covers thrown in for rude measure.
Prime case of the latter is his audacious and delicate take on Madonna’s ‘Stay’ while the pick of his own bunch is ‘Blue Plastic Bags’ which bemoans the fact no one goes out anymore and, worse, when you’re having to bide indoors nobody even comes to visit. As the refrain goes: ‘sing along, with the sad song.’
