Jamie Dornan enlisted the help of a sex expert for his role in 'Fifty Shades of Grey'.

The 32-year-old actor will appear as the male protagonist, Christian Grey, in the film adaptation of the erotic novel and has revealed that he watched some real submissive action to prepare for the part.

He confessed: "It's such a big part of the character that I wanted to know what I was doing."

The film - which will be released on February 13, 2015 - will follow the hunk's escapades with Anastasia Steele, played by Dakota Johnson, with whom he embarks on a kinky sexual relationship.

Describing how he familiarised himself with the idea of domination and submission in the bedroom, he explained: "This guy came along with his submissive, I sat in the corner with a beer and watched.

"My driver was on the other side of the door, God knows what he thought."

The actor originally failed to secure the film's starring role, but was called in as an emergency replacement when 'Pacific Rim' star Charlie Hunnam abruptly quit the project shortly before filming was due to commence.

He has now admitted taking the part was a huge decision because his wife - Amelia Warner - was heavily pregnant with their 11-month-old daughter, but praised the singer-songwriter for being so understanding of his situation.

In an interview with Shortlist magazine, he explained: "A lot of people would have had a s**t fit at 30-something weeks pregnant, hearing, 'Darling, we're going to Vancouver this week for four months - we're going to have a Canadian baby and I'm going to do a film where, for parts of it, I will be naked'.

"That's a tough pitch, but my wife is an incredible person."

  • Directed by: Sam Taylor-Johnson
  • Cast: Dakota Johnson, Jamie Dornan, Luke Grimes, Victor Rasuk, Jennifer Ehle
  • UK release: 13 February 2015

Despite its troubling gender politics and distinct lack of plot, the likeable Johnson brings nuance and charm to a paper-thin character; Dornan manages to offer a hint of humanity; and given the many constraints, this sleek, fairly trim and occasionally sensual adaptation is the best imaginable outcome.
