A guide to bonfire and firework events in and around Wolverhampton 2014

Celebrate Bonfire Night this year at one of the events taking place in and around Wolverhampton. Not far from the city centre, head to Wolverhampton Racecourse on Gorsebrook Road for a family-friendly bonfire and fireworks night (Sat 5 Nov). This year sees a fireworks display for the kids start at 7pm, with the bonfire lit to warm cold hands at 7.30pm. The main display is scheduled to take place at 8.30pm.

To the north east in Bloxwich, the Bloxwich Bonfire & Fireworks Display takes place at King George V Memorial Playing Fields (Sat 22 Oct), with a bonfire lit at 7pm and a display at 8pm. In Stafford, Shugborough Estate is opening exclusively for Stafford & District Round Table's annual fireworks event (Sat 5 Nov). It recently transferred back to the ownership of the National Trust and won't reopen to the general public until 2017. At the event, there's not one but two fireworks displays – the larger set to music – plus a fair and food outlets.

One of the region's largest gatherings is taking place at Weston Park in Shifnal (Sun 6 Nov), where there's not just a bonfire and fireworks, but also a fun fair, food stalls and a bar to keep everyone happy. In nearby Telford, wrap up warm before you head to fireworks night at open-air museum Blists Hill Victorian Town (Sat 5 Nov). The gates open at 6pm, so you have time to explore the town's Victorian streets and atmospheric buildings. Chat to the costumed residents, witness an iron casting demonstration and get ready to watch the fireworks from 7.30pm.

For those in the Dudley area, the legendary Himley Bonfire and Fireworks (Sat 5 Nov) kick off with a bonfire at 7.45pm before a spectacular display lights up the night sky at 8.30pm. Gates open at 4.30pm and there are funfair rides, seasonal refreshments and Heart FM providing the tunes. And if you can't wait until November to see some catherine wheels, Willenhall Memorial Park hosts a bonfire and fireworks display as early as Sat 29 Oct, with rides for the kids, stalls, and the rest of the usual works.
