The best gigs to celebrate Hallowe’en 2014

All slashed up and nowhere to go? Claire Sawers round up dark Halloween music and club options

Gory gig options are in good supply this Halloween. Fans of the tits + terror school of Dario Argento giallo horror movies can watch 70s Italian prog rock legends Goblin perform their live soundtrack to a screening of Suspiria at SWG3 Warehouse. Which is probably where the Edinburgh slowcore band eagleowl would be too, if they weren’t dressing up for what used to be a traditional Halloween transformation into Our Ladies of Sorrow - their kraut-goth-giallo tribute act. They’ll rise from the dead for the first time in four years, as part of Lost Map’s Halloween Special, also featuring Tuff Love, Insect Heroes, CARBS and Archie Bronson Outfit. Meanwhile Zola Jesus, whose poker-straight black locks and middle-part were positively made for Halloween, will be bringing her goth-pop to Stereo.

Halloween handily falls on a Friday this year, so night creatures can continue into the small hours with Halloween clubnight specials from Pressure (with Dave Clarke, Boddika and an album launch for Slam), Nightrave (featuring Teki Latex and Joe Howe), or the excellent Hot Mess – inviting you to a ‘homo disco massacre’, with DJ Simon Eilbeck.

Glasgow: Zola Jesus, Stereo; Goblin plays Suspiria, SWG3; Nightrave, La Cheetah; Pressure, The Arches.

Edinburgh: Lost Map’s Halloween Special, The Mash House; Hot Mess, the Annexe at the Liquid Room; all on Fri 31 Oct.

Hot Mess

Queer dance party where the focus is on the music, which is a heady mix of pop classics, obscure synthwave, house, techno and disco from the safe hands of DJ Simonotron.

More techno action from Slam featuring some big-name guests.

Zola Jesus

Zola Jesus has a unique and extraordinary voice and specialises in lo-fi new wave electronica.

Top shelf bass music from ghettotech to grime from Nightwave.

Lost Map's Hallowe'en Special

Lost Map team up with Apocalypso for a Hallowe'en special, featuring the kraut-goth sounds of Our Ladies of Sorrow, Sweden's Monoganon, Glasgow axe-wielders Sharptooth and Kid Canaveral's Kate Canaveral in solo form, DJ Dream Caravan on the decks. The night's theme is extinctions and endangered species – so get creative.
