Clive Owen will play a cocaine-addicted surgeon in his new TV series.
The 50-year-old actor stars as John Thackery - a doctor with a penchant for narcotics and prostitutes - in new US drama 'The Knick', set in 1900s New York.
The series follows the life of the medic at the Big Apple's Knickerbocker Hospital, who, without the use of modern technology and pain relief is forced to perform "gruesome" operations on a daily basis.
Clive told the Daily Star newspaper: "Every single operation is exactly how it would have been done at the time. And the breakthroughs they make in the show are really what was going on.
"There was a huge amount of failure but that was the world they were living in."
He added: "Cocaine was legal at the time. They thought it was the new wonder drug and people used it widely. But then people started getting addicted."
The show has already been in a hit in the US and the 'Sin City' star is keen to continue his success across the pond after it was re-commissioned for a second series.
'The Knick' will air on Sky Atlantic this Thursday.
