Prehistoric Friends

Glasgow's hottest emerging bands take to the stage, plus special guests TYCI DJs and Adventures in Light

The Pleasance Sessions – Edinburgh’s very own cultural Oktoberfest – returns for its second year. And on Thu 16 Oct, three of Glasgow’s hottest emerging bands hotfoot it east for The List presents … night at the award-nominated music festival. Here’s the lowdown on the lineup.

Who are they?

Ubre Blanca

What to expect:

Named after a Cuban cow famed for its prodigious milk production, Ubre Blanca is made up of ex-Shitdisco member Joel Stone and current Remember Remember drummer Andy Brown (also playing a Pleasance Sessions gig on Sat 18 Oct). The duo uses 70s/80s synth-based film soundtracks as inspiration for their critically-acclaimed retro-fusion instrumental tracks.

It would be at home on the Drive soundtrack. See also: Oneohtrix Point Never or Emeralds

Who are they?

Two Wings

What to expect:

Psychedelic folk-rock has never sounded so good thanks to the killer song-writing partnership between Nalle vocalist Hanna Tuulikki and former Trembling Bells guitarist Ben Reynolds that catalysed this five-piece band back in 2009. Tuulikki’s Stevie Nicks-esque vocals ensure tracks straddling multiple genres (soul, gospel, electronica, country and pop are all thrown in there) fuse traditional and modern sounds.

Sounds like…

A dash of Fleetwood Mac, a little Kate Bush, and some Neil Young for good measure.

Who are they?

Prehistoric Friends

What to expect:

The best of Glasgow’s psychedelic dream-pop scene come together to make waves with their genre-defying music. Prehistoric Friends are multi-instrumentalist Liam Chapman (Miaoux Miaoux, Friends in America) and violinist Nichola Kerr (Glasgow Chamber Orchestra), plus Admiral Fallow’s Joe Rattray, Miaoux Miaoux’s Julian Corrie and The Seventeenth Century’s Andrew Truscott. They only formed as a full band this year, but in the past they’ve supported the likes of Frightened Rabbit and Rozi Plain.

Sounds like…

Bon Iver meets Idlewild

Listen:

Also on the night, Glasgow-based femme collective TYCI DJs will be mixing the best tunes from female artists, MCs, DJs and bands. Plus, there’ll be stunning live visual lighting sets from Adventures in Light, fresh from stints at T in the Park and Kelburn Garden Party.
