Edinburgh’s Christmas celebrations for 2014-15 were revealed this morning, at the Assembly Rooms on George Street. Run by Underbelly and Unique Events, this year’s collection of festive markets, attractions and performances will open on Friday 21 November.

St Andrew Square will host the Paradiso Speigeltent again this year, with a varied line up of acts over the festive period. Confirmed performers include comedian Al Murray, acclaimed Australian circus act Scotch and Soda, all-male burlesque group Briefs and party-starters Hot Dub Time Machine, fresh from their sell-out run at the Edinburgh Fringe. For families, there’s Baby Loves Disco, where parent and child alike boogey on down to retro tunes, and the stage adaptation of Julia Donaldson’s Stick Man.

Elsewhere, there’s the return of the Scottish Market and the new addition of an ice rink around the Melville Monument, which will have a circular bar at its foot.

Down in Princes Street Gardens the iconic Big Wheel is back with its weather-proof pods, overlooking the spectacular ice rink beneath the Scott Monument. This year there will be 106 stalls at the famous European Christmas Market selling a range of continental food, drinks and crafts in the gardens and the along the Mound.

An extra effort has been made to ensure that shows, rides and events are more affordable. Free events include Light Night on George Street hosted by Arlene Stuart of Forth One (Sun 23 Nov), a Nativity Carol Concert (Sun 30 Nov) and St Andrew’s Day celebrations (Sun 30 Nov), including live music, storytelling and curling and ceilidh demonstrations. Similarly, a number of additional low-cost attractions in Princes Street Gardens have been lined-up to complement the newly extended Santa Land, including the swan ride, reindeer carousel and Ice Wall.

Family prices are available at all events. Additionally, a 20% discount is available to everyone with a postcode beginning with EH, which can be claimed on top of family discounts.
