Director James Gunn has confirmed that Captain Marvel will not appear in 'Guardians of the Galaxy 2'

Captain Marvel will not appear in the 'Guardians of the Galaxy' sequel.

The movie, which has proven to be an enormous commercial and critical success, has already been lined up for a sequel - but director James Gunn has confirmed that Carol Danvers, otherwise known as Ms Marvel, will not feature in the next flick.

Speaking to Collider at Dragon Con, Gunn revealed his determination to keep the sequel an earthling-free zone, besides Chris Pratt's character Peter Quill.

The announcement follows a noticeable rise in calls from Marvel fans to see female characters play a more prominent role in the action films.

For instance, acclaimed actress Jessica Chastain recently called on Marvel to release a female superhero movie, suggesting the studio makes Scarlett Johansson the film's star.

The 37-year-old actress told The Wrap: "Where is the Scarlett Johansson superhero movie? I don't understand it, why is it taking so long for this? This woman clearly shows that people want to go see her in the movies."

She continued: "'Lucy', didn't it beat 'Hercules' by a lot opening weekend, when it was made for a lot less? She shows that she kicks ass, she's a great actress. 'Under the Skin' is an incredible film, and why are we still waiting for a go-ahead on a superhero movie starring Scarlett Johansson?"

The gang are back, with a rollicking plot involving stolen batteries and Ego (Russell) who may or may not be the long-lost dad of Peter Quill (Pratt). It’s very CGI-heavy, sometimes tiringly so, but the humour still charms and the finale picks it up after a sluggish second act.
