'Deepsea Challenge 3D' focuses on deepsea diving, one of James Cameron's biggest passions, but the director hopes viewers don't see it as a vanity project

James Cameron's new film 'Deepsea Challenge 3D' focuses on one of his biggest passions: deepsea diving.

The new flick, which sees the esteemed movie director appear in front of the camera rather than behind it, captures an expedition led by Cameron in 2012, and the veteran filmmaker says he thoroughly enjoyed making the movie.

He told the Guardian newspaper: "I'm very curious. I love science and I love exploration. I know when I go on a sub I'm going to see something I've never seen before, and the deeper you go the higher the likelihood I might see something nobody's seen before. You can't get that in a movie theatre."

Cameron - who's work includes award-wining films like 'Avatar' and 'Titanic' - conceded his wealth has helped him to realise his ambitions.

The 60-year-old explained: "I think it certainly helped because I put in the seed money to get the ball rolling and to start building and designing the sub."

But Cameron says 'Deepsea Challenge 3D' is much more than a vanity project - something he hopes watchers will be quick to recognise.

He added: "This is not just about some rich guy writing a cheque and getting some race car built for him to go on a ride. I like to hope that you see that in the film."
