Shelby Lynne - Just a Little Lovin’ – Inspired by Dusty Springfield

We may be waiting forever for that Whiteout tribute album: most artists prefer to wrestle with back catalogues far sturdier than their own in these situations. Dusty Springfield’s greatest hits are only a hair short of genius anyway and Shelby Lynne’s misty, languid redrafts are like photocopies of Van Gogh’s ‘Sunflowers’, they only make you crave the real thing.
Lynne sounds fantastic, smoky, mournful even and vulnerable in places and if it weren’t that so many of these tunes were not ingrained in our memories note for note already it might be easier to find something fresh about them here but instead this reads like more of an self-indulgence than a treat.
