Robert Venditti & Brett Weldele - The Surrogates (4 stars)

Robert Venditti

(Top Shelf)

In the near-future cybernetic surrogates will live our lives for us, reducing humanity to a race of reclusive couch potatoes. That’s the intriguing premise of this cleverly conceived and smartly executed science fiction/crime graphic novel. Given the growing popularity of web-based life simulator games, writer Robert Venditti and artist Brett Weldele’s chilling vision of the future is only one step away.

Set in a vast American metropolis in the year 2052, the economically scripted and evocatively illustrated tale takes the form of a police investigation into the destruction of a pair of surrogates who uncover a conspiracy involving corporate greed, religious fundamentalism and techno-terrorism. Fast-paced and suspenseful, it’s also a thought-provoking and finally quite affecting look at the state of humanity in the 21st century. Rich source material, then, for the blockbuster movie adaptation currently in production with Bruce Willis.
