Cecil Castellucci & Jim Rugg - The Plain Janes

The latest entry in the new Minx range captures almost every chick lit cliché. High school setting? Check. Geeky girls save the day? Check. And, of course, there’s a moody pretty boy for those raging hormones. And yet it’s not terrible with the plot a neat offering from Cecil Castellucci, an established author for young adults.
It follows the life of Jane, whose parents move her out of the city after a bombing. While adjusting to suburban life, she finds her allies in a group of social rejects in a sweet tale of art and sisterhood. Although predictable, the art work is appealing and Jane is genuinely likeable. It’s a pleasant attempt to appeal to a new market; there just needs to be more conviction behind the concept.
