Ivy First Birthday Weekender

The Ivy, Glasgow, Fri 30 Nov–Sun 2 Dec
Over the last 12 months the Ivy has been busy building itself a reputation as one of the best pubs in Glasgow to catch great music. To celebrate its first birthday, the venue is hosting a special weekender, packed full of audio delights. They owners have also applied for a 2am licence, so that the party can continue into clubs hours.
Kicking the weekend off on the Friday (30 November) are Glasgow’s funk stalwarts Divine, who play upstairs. Down in the basement you can hear boompty-clap action from Five20East’s Ooft! boys and Mash. Freakmenoovers take charge of proceedings upstairs on Saturday (1 Dec), while the basement’s bassbins receive some punishment from local heroes Jackmaster and Boom Monk Ben. By the Sunday (2 Dec), it’ll probably be sore heads all round, so the party winds up with a barbeque and DJ set from Tru Thoughts’ Diesler.
It’s an eclectic and imaginative line-up which demonstrates the Ivy’s musical philosophy. As owner Darren Smith explains: ‘We’ve never worried about sticking to a particular genre, but whatever we put on we want to be a great example of that type of music.
‘Because of our location, we don’t get a lot of passing trade so we have to make The Ivy somewhere people will make a point of coming to.’
It appears to be working. Smith promises that the Ivy will continue to develop as a venue, and the coming year will see involvement with the Triptych festival and further big name guest bookings.
