Artists in Venice
Ten years on from Scotland’s first involvement with the Venice Biennale, contemporary artists Campbell, Sworn and Tompkins represented the nation once more with the Scotland + Venice 2013 show. It’s coming to Glasgow’s Common Guild in 2014. (DP)

28 Summerhall

Hot 100 2013: 29-20

Adventurous venue
With another successful Fringe programme under its belt and now running a year-round arts programme, Summerhall has continued to be one of Scotland’s most exciting and surprising venues. In 2013 they hosted a huge diversity of events including a gig by music legend Nile Rodgers. (GT)

Fearless playwright
The prolific workrate of Drummond reached an apex, crowned by five-star reviews for Quiz Show while his tour of Bullet Catch has now reached America. Drummond is an eclectic and vibrant writer, inspired by science and never afraid to face harsh truths. (GKV)

26 William McIlvanney

Hot 100 2013: 29-20

Grit lit
Perhaps the most charming man in the literature world, McIlvanney recently launched a website of personal essays and journalism. This year his classic Laidlaw trilogy was republished by Canongate, and he’s been a popular guest at literature festivals. In 2014, five more of his novels will be republished. (KL)

25 Tectonics Festival

Hot 100 2013: 29-20

Sound engineers
Exploring the hinterland between orchestral and experimental music, the first Glasgow leg of Tectonics (launched by Ilan Volkov of the BBC SSO) was hailed a huge success, receiving glowing praise from fans of sound art, avant-garde noise, performance art and trad classical alike. (CS)

Hot 100 2013: 29-20

Big leggy
Drew Wright, the baritone bard of Leith, took his pop-up song shop to Fife and LeithLate, donned his red bunnet along with 7VWWVW to transport their wonderful Tom Weir tribute show to Skye, made a record with the National Galleries of Scotland, and went to the theatre with beatboxer Bigg Taj. (SS)

23 Peter Capaldi

Hot 100 2013: 29-20

Time Lord
The versatile actor dabbled in blockbusters including zombie action fest World War Z and Julian Assange biopic The Fifth Estate but the news that Capaldi will embark on his greatest adventure yet as the 13th incarnation of Doctor Who marks 2013 as a career landmark. (HN)

22 Electric Frog

River people
The Frog continued their excellently-curated series of Weekenders this year, with one big addition. Their inaugural Riverside Festival (with Pressure) made the best of a good outdoor space at Glasgow’s Riverside Museum, with a cracking lineup featuring Jamie xx, Boys Noize and Michael Mayer. (NB)

21 David Tennant

Hot 100 2013: 29-20

Broad appeal
The former Doctor Who returned to his roots by treading the boards in NT’s new production of Richard II, proof positive that a populist actor can inject intensity into the Bard’s overlooked role. He also lit up the small screen in ITV’s acclaimed whodunit, Broadchurch. (LI)

20 Glasgow Film Festival

Hot 100 2013: 29-20

Hotshot movie bash
The best film fest in the west scored a special guests coup in 2013, with Joss Whedon, Eli Roth and Gemma Arterton all making personal appearances. Look out for strands on Chilean cinema and the golden age of Hollywood next year. (NB)
