39 Stewart Laing

Hot 100 2013: 39-30

Theatre maverick
The man behind Untitled Projects, Laing brought a head-on collision of gender–bending and grunge to Genet’s Maids while his take on Hogg’s Confessions of a Justified Sinner was a wicked satire on both theatre itself and the nature of identity. (LI)

38 Stephen Sutcliffe

Hot 100 2013: 39-30

Image innovator
Harrogate-raised, Glasgow-based artist Sutcliffe showed his most ambitious video work yet at Tramway. Outwork was a multi-screen affair that invoked Erving Goffman, Jacques Derrida and a variety of high and low cultural found clips, commenting on the very way in which we view the moving image. (DP)

37 David Harrower

Hot 100 2013: 39-30

Drama lord
Ciara was an unsurprising Fringe hit: Harrower’s ear for language took this vehicle for Blythe Duff beyond a simple tale of gangland Glasgow into more intriguing, personal territory and is a fine addition to his bibliography of bracing, brittle scripts. (LI)

36 Blythe Duff

Hot 100 2013: 39-30

CATS woman
Duff may remain best known for Taggart, but 2013 established her stage credentials. Winning best female actor at the CATS, she was the toast of the Fringe with Ciara, which author David Harrower insisted was written with her in mind. (GKV)

35 Mark Millar

Hot 100 2013: 39-30

HRH’s comics guy
Now Mark Millar MBE after being honoured in the Queen’s 2013 Birthday Honours List. The film Kick-Ass 2, based on his graphic novels with John Romita Jr, was praised by Quentin Tarantino. (KL)

34 Iain De Caestecker

Hot 100 2013: 39-30

Rapidly rising star
De Caestecker has gone from jobbing TV actor to film star and cult icon. He starred in Scots romcom Not Another Happy Ending, Irvine Welsh adap Filth and horror In Fear, plus he landed the role of Fitz in Marvel’s Agents of SHIELD, a direct spin-off from Joss Whedon’s Avengers superhero blockbuster. 33 Simon Meek / Story Mechanics

Hot 100 2013: 39-30

32 Instructional Media

Hot 100 2013: 39-30

DIY messengers

31 Numbers

Hot 100 2013: 39-30

Label anniversary
