Monty Python unveil details for 2014 stage show at The O2, London

UPDATE: Following impressive sales figures, yet more dates have been added to the Pythons' run at The O2 (as reported on Chortle). The additional dates will run from Tue 15-Sun 20 Jul 2014 (excluding Thu 17), with tickets on sale from 10am on Fri 29 Nov. See listing info for full details and ticketing links. The following copy remains unchanged.

The surviving members of Monty Python – John Cleese, Eric Idle, Michael Palin, Terry Gilliam and Terry Jones – officially announced some details of their forthcoming stage show, which will take place at The O2, London on Tue 1 Jul 2014.

Among the jokes, half-truths and outright lies shared by the gang at today's press conference, the show (which Idle will apparently direct) will contain a mixture of old and new material, some Gilliam animations and 'a tiny bit of ancient sex'. Idle claimed that the show will feature 'Arlene Phillips and singers and dancers,' but thanks to Cleese's artificial body parts (knee and hip), the silly walks may have to be left out. The show will apparently be filmed and, according Idle, 'we'll try to flog it later'.

What the show certainly won't do is tackle contemporary topics. Says Palin, 'It's not topical, a lot of it's physical, a lot of it's very silly'.

Tickets go on sale at 10am on Mon 25 Nov – for full venue, date and pricing info, plus ticketing links, check the listing below.

Monty Python Live (mostly): One Down, Five to Go

  • Directed by: Eric Idle

It's … the ground-breaking comedy troupe, back together for a live show and promising 'comedy, pathos, music and a tiny bit of ancient sex.'
