Hugh Grant earns $17m from six years with Liz

British film star Hugh Grant has made a profit of around $17 million after an Andy Warhol portrait he bought six years ago sold at auction for $21 million.

The archetypal English fop sold the 1963 portrait of Elizabeth Taylor at Christie’s in New York yesterday.

The actress was the artist’s muse, along with Jacqueline Kennedy and Marilyn Monroe, and the painting was one of 13 colourful portraits produced at the height of her fame.

The picture was created while Taylor recovered from an illness which had halted the production of Cleopatra.

Talking about the Liz portraits at the time, Warhol said: 'I started those a long time ago when she was so sick and everybody said she was going to die.

‘Now I am doing them all over, putting bright colours on her lips and eyes.’

The 40x40 square inch silkscreen painting sets Taylor in a turquoise background with starling scarlet lips.
