The 44-year-old actor is in talks to take on the role of pirate leader Captain Blackbeard in the story, based on J.M Barrie's tales of a boy who can fly and never ages.
Joe Wright has signed up to helm the new big screen project for Warner Bros. and the movie is being described as an introductory film, similar to 'Batman Begins'.
Greg Berlanti, best known for creating superhero TV show 'Arrow', will produce while Jason Fuchs has penned the script, which will see an orphan go into battle against evil pirates in a bid to save Peter's home island, Neverland.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Warner Bros. is "very high" on the project and has made it "one of its priorities".
The character of Peter Pan was created by Scottish author J.M. Barrie and the boy who refuses to grow up has been the subject of many movies, including a famous 1953 Disney animated feature.
Steven Spielberg directed a loose sequel to Barrie's books with 'Hook' in 1991, and Universal and Columbia produced the 2003 film 'Peter Pan'.
Meanwhile, 'Magic Mike' actor-and-producer Channing Tatum is developing a rival Peter Pan project, 'Pan' with Joe Roth for Columbia Pictures.
