Paul McGann made a shock return to 'Doctor Who' in a surprise episode yesterday (14.11.13).
The 54-year-old actor - who played the Eighth Doctor in the 1996 'Doctor Who' TV film - reprised his role as the titular Time Lord in a seven-minute mini episode called 'The Night of the Doctor', which premiered on BBC iPlayer without prior warning.
The short film, a precursor to the 50th anniversary episode 'The Day of the Doctor' - which will be screened on November 23 - sees the Doctor try to save gunship pilot Cass (Emma Campbell-Jones) but in attempting to do so he crashes onto planet Karn and had to be rescued by the Sisterhood of Karn.
It's not the first meeting between the two as the Time Lord met the Sisterhood in 'The Brain of Morbius', which aired in 1976.
Ohila (Clare Higgins) then tells the Doctor that if he drinks the Elixir of Life it "can trigger your regeneration, bring you back", so he consumes the substance and turns into the "War Doctor", who is portrayed by John Hurt.
'The Day of the Doctor' will be broadcast on BBC One on Saturday November 23 and will see current Doctor Matt Smith joined by John, David Tennant, Billie Piper and Jenna-Louise Coleman.
