'Fast & Furious 6' director Justin Lin will direct the next 'Bourne' movie starring Jeremy Renner
'Fast & Furious 6' director Justin Lin will helm the next 'Bourne' film.
The filmmaker - the man behind the last four 'Fast & Furious' films - has been tapped by movie studio Universal to take over the stalwart super spy franchise, which will see Jeremy Renner reprise his role as Aaron Cross.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Lin will join the project with returning producers Frank Marshall, Jeffrey Weiner and Ben Smith.
Lin helped turn 'Fast & Furious' into a blockbuster franchise by rebooting it in 2009 with 'Fast & Furious'. He followed up with 2011's 'Fast Five' and this year's 'Fast & Furious 6', which grossed nearly $800 million worldwide.
The director decided to leave the franchise ahead of 'Fast & Furious 7' after Universal fast-tracked the project to a 2014 release date - just one year after the release of the sixth film.
'The Conjuring' helmer James Wan is set to direct the new movie.
Earlier this year, Universal hired 'Sherlock Holmes' scribe Anthony Peckham to write a script for the new 'Bourne' film.
Renner took over the franchise in 2012's 'Bourne Legacy', starring alongside Rachel Weisz, as a black ops agent.
Matt Damon initially starred in three movies as Jason Bourne, including 2002's 'The Bourne Identity', 2004's 'The Bourne Supremacy' and 2007's 'The Bourne Ultimatum'.
