Philip Bailey claims reality TV shows "makes stars of people who are not ready to be stars".
The Earth Wind & Fire singer has been in the limelight with his band since the 70s - scoring hits such as 'September' and 'Boogie Wonderland' - but he thinks chart stars of today haven't started at the bottom and worked their way to the top like his funk group.
He told BANG Showbiz: "In one way reality TV shows can show people what it takes to do what we do. On the other hand it makes stars of people who are not ready to be stars.
"They've never played before an audience five nights in a row, they don't know how to tour, they don't know a lot of things about being a performer."
Despite his opinions on their experience, Philip doesn't feel people who become famous through TV talent shows such as 'The X Factor' or 'The Voice' are any less deserving of stardom.
He said: "I'm not taking anything away from their talent and not saying that the way we all came up is the only way to do it, but in some ways they'll have to work backwards to get that experience which is the only way to really become a professional."
Earth, Wind & Fire are currently on a world tour, while their latest album, 'Now, Then & Forever' is out now.
