Ellie Goulding was 'shocked' to beat David Bowie to the Best Solo Artist trophy at the Q Awards today (21.10.13)

Ellie Goulding was stunned to beat David Bowie to the Best Solo Artist trophy at the Q Awards today (21.10.13).

The singer earned her first UK number one with 'Burn' in August, but was lost for words when she beat the iconic singer to claim the award.

Speaking at the event, held at London's Grosvenor hotel, Ellie told BANG Showbiz: "I'm a bit shocked to be honest. People assume if you're a singer and you perform on stage you're going to be good at speaking, but, you know, it's tough.

"I beat David Bowie! I'm very proud of this award. I've worked hard for it for a long time, I've read Q for many years and I'm very proud of this.

"I'm just very happy to win. It's great to be here because you get to hang out with lots of other artists and it's a really nice atmosphere because it's the afternoon so it's a bit more chilled than usual."

The 26-year-old singer has been a long-time fan Britain's Q magazine, which hosts the awards, and credits the publication for championing new musical talent.

She gushed: "I really rate Q magazine for music, it has really good coverage for new bands, new acts and older acts and bands so I'm very appreciative they I've got the support from Q readers."
