Export ban imposed on £2m Turner
A watercolour painting by Turner, considered by experts to be one of the finest in its medium, has been banned from going on sale abroad until next year to give the UK a chance to retain it.
The painting is a view of Lake Lucerne in Switzerland and has been valued at £2 million.
Following a recommendation by the Reviewing Committee on the Exports of Works of Art and Objects of Cultural Interest, the watercolour will not go up for sale overseas until January next year.
This may be extended until May 2008, if a serious bid is made.
The painting was one of four watercolours by Turner shown at the Royal Academy in London in 1815 – all of which centre around the Alps.
