Five operas to get their 15 minutes

  • 31 October 2007

Scottish Opera has given an insight into five new 15-minute operas, which involve collaborations between Scotland’s top writing and musical talent.

The works, which include contributions from popular authors Alexander McCall Smith and Ian Rankin, will be performed by a chamber orchestra of around 15 musicians and eight singers.

The audience will determine whether any are made into full length productions.

General director of the opera, Alex Reedijk, said: ‘Five:15 is about questioning what opera could or should look like in the 21st Century.

‘There all have a mixture of arias and duets, on the whole. It’s not a competition, this is research and development – it’s not ‘Opera Idol’ or anything like that.’

Tickets for performances in Glasgow’s Oran Mor and the Hub in Edinburgh go on sale today.

‘I would urge anyone to book pronto,’ Mr Reedijk added. ‘We have got the first couple of scores.’
