'One Direction: This Is Us' has topped the US box office after taking $17 million on its opening weekend

'One Direction: This Is Us' has topped the US box office.

The film - which documents the meteoric rise to fame of the boy band, Harry Styles, Niall Horan, Liam Payne, Louis Tomlinson and Zayn Malik - took $17 million in ticket sales in its opening weekend, pushing out Lee Daniels' 'The Butler' following the motion picture's two-week run at the top.

Rory Bruer, Sony Pictures' President of Worldwide Distribution, said: "We are thrilled with our result. It exceeded our expectations not only domestically, but everywhere, worldwide."

The concert movie's estimated $17 million in ticket sales do not include projected takings for US Labour Day today (02.09.13), while 'The Butler' generated $14.7 million from Friday to Sunday and Jennifer Aniston's latest film 'We're the Millers' was in third with $12.6 million.

'This Is Us', which is directed by Morgan Spurlock, is expected to fall just short of the estimated $22 million in takings over America's holiday weekend.

Spurlock recently admitted it was a "no-brainer" for him to take on the project and he hopes people will have a "different" view of the boy band after watching the film.

He said: "I'm really proud of the movie and think it will make people look at them a little differently. They are so grounded and so humble."

Liam previously told how he gets emotional every time he watches the motion picture because he misses his family so much while on tour with the 'Little Things' hitmakers.

He explained: "It is hard being away from our families but it was even harder to watch. That scene where my dad is talking about wanting to take me to the pub, every time I watch it , it makes me want to cry because we never hear from them what it's like for us to be away from home."
