Rooney Mara has joined the cast of 'Carol'.

The 'Girl With A Dragon Tattoo' actress is replacing Mia Wasikowska and will star alongside Cate Blanchett in the Todd Haynes-directed adaptation of Patricia Highsmith's novel 'The Price of Salt'.

Hayne is "thrilled" to have Rooney onboard the project, a 1950s lesbian love story, that marks his first directorial since 2007's 'I'm Not There', which also starred Blanchett and the late Heath Ledger.

In a written statement, Haynes, 52, said: "We're over the moon to have Rooney on board, I've been a tremendous admirer of her work from the beginning, so the thought of bringing her together with Cate on screen is thrilling, to say the least."

Elizabeth Karlsen of Number 9 productions added: "It's a testament to Todd Haynes as a director and the quality of the script that we have managed to attract this exciting calibre of actor."

Mara will star as a young woman unfulfilled in her job at a department store in New York who is bought together with Blanchett's character, a wife trapped in an unhappy marriage with a wealthy husband.

The Weinstein Company picked up US distribution rights to the script - which has been adapted by Phyllis Nagy - in Cannes earlier this year and shooting is due to begin in spring 2014.

Achingly beautiful, slow-burning study of lesbian romance and female strength in the face of adversity, with outstanding performances from Blanchett and…
