That her name is pronounced Go-Shay is only the first of many things wonderfully peculiar about this Louisana-born country singer. She was the definition of late starter in some senses, only recorded her first album at 35 but by then she had collected up enough life experience for a dozen long players: being a teen runaway, rehab, drug abuse, philosophy school drop out, trained chef, successful restaurateur, politically aware, socially astute lesbian. Oh and bewitching, intense country singer as exemplified on new album, Mercy Now.

Cabaret Voltaire, Edinburgh, Tue 7 Nov.
