This Mess We Keep Reshaping (Fence)
While far from being an actual mess, there’s certainly not a huge amount of form to Edinburgh hip hop/folk experimentalists Found’s second album. Ever the slaves to the right side of their brains, the quintet have taken their ‘songs as art projects’ thing to a new level, with a suite of stop-starting blips, samples and beats-based aural sketches.
When it works it’s impressive, particularly on ‘When You Fall’, which peaks and troughs like a kind of funky weather chart. Otherwise, it’s hard to get beyond the feeling that Found are much better at redrawing pop’s boundaries (as on their debut record) than they are when they attempt to do away with these boundaries altogether.
