Lord Coe unveils Highland monument for Olympic effort
Former athlete Sebastian Coe has unveiled a sculpture in Aviemore to mark the contribution Badenoch and Strathspey’s residents have made to the UK’s Olympic effort.
The area, which has a population of 13,500, has nurtured 14 Olympic athletes – more per head of the population than anywhere else in the UK.
The names of all 14 athletes have been engraved on the £36,000 bronze monument, with room for future Olympians to be added.
Their talents range from skiing and snowboarding to curling.
In light of its contribution, the area is bidding to become a training camp for the 2012 Olympic Games.
