The first episode of the new 'Great British Bake Off' series turned into a bloodbath after every contestant cut themselves and the show's medics ran out of blue plasters.

The new series of 'Great British Bake Off' kicked off with a bloodbath after every contestant cut themselves.

The show's medics were working overtime trying to fix everyone up following the flurry of accidents on the programme's set at Harptree Court near Bristol, and they even rant out of protective blue plasters such was the extent of the damage.

An insider said: "It looked more like the set of a horror film than a cosy TV cookery show.

"I don't think they realised just how sharp those knives are.

"Professional knives are so much sharper than what you'd use at home. The medics were rushing around trying to treat everyone."

Judges Paul Hollywood and Mary Berry were left particularly stunned by the finger slashing on the new series, which returns to BBC Two next month.

The insider added to The Sun newspaper: "Paul and Mary looked shocked. They just couldn't believe it."

Despite the catalogue of errors in the first episode, Paul recently joked he was "annoyed" by the new series because the contestants were of such a high standard.

He told BANG Showbiz: "The standard this year has been amazing, they are more professional this year. They need their necks winding in more. But actually they are really good.

"I've been really shocked actually, we both have. It's been annoying because I can't find anything wrong and that winds me up a lot to be honest."
