John Michie is to join 'Holby City'.

The 'Coronation Street' star - who plays twisted firestarter Karl Munro in the ITV soap - is swapping Weatherfield for the BBC One medical series, in which he is expected to portray a main character in the neurology department, at the end of the year.

He said: "I'm absolutely thrilled to be joining the cast of Holby City and I'm looking forward to taking on a new challenge.

"My mum was a nurse and always wanted me to be a doctor not an actor. So finally her wish has half come true."

John's departure will come after Karl looks set to get his comeuppance for starting the Rovers Return fire which eventually led to the death of his former fling Sunita Alahan (Shobna Gulati).

There is another twist to the story to come as the evil cabbie discovers wimpy teenager Craig (Colson Smith) has information about the blaze which could lead to the truth coming out.

Karl befriends Craig and starts buying him computer games in a bid to keep him quiet, but the youngster ends up going missing from Weatherfield and Karl is quizzed by the police over his disappearance.

A show insider told the Daily Star newspaper: "We already know Karl will do whatever it takes to keep his secret.

"He has killed before and he's likely to do it again if he feels the need.

"Craig is the key to his freedom because he knows stuff regarding Karl and the night of the fire.

"So has Craig run away - or has Karl decided to get him under control once and for all? Keep watching - this storyline is a corker."
