Cannes Film Festival jury president Steven Spielberg isn't sure how he'll manage the role and plans to "play it by ear"
Cannes jury president Steven Spielberg is going to "play it by ear".
The 'Lincoln' director will lead an all-star panel - including 'Stoker' actress Nicole Kidman, 'Life of Pi' director Ang Lee and 'Django Unchained' actor Christoph Waltz - in deciding the winner of the prestigious Palme d'Or prize at the 66th annual Cannes Film Festival, and he admits he isn't sure how he'll manage in the role.
Asked how effective he will be leading the jury, he said: "The twelfth day, after the deliberations, when we've handed in our verdicts, would be a good time to answer that question. Right now I'm simply going to play it by ear."
The filmmaker revealed he has been asked to lead the jury in the past but his busy schedule has always prevented him from taking on the role.
He added to France's Europe1 radio station: "This offer has been made many times before but I was always directing in May so it wasn't possible."
Spielberg looks forward to the challenge this year, however, and is particularly excited to see all the movies on offer at the festival.
He said: "This will be fun for me. I love watching movies. I see so many of them that open at Cannes, sometimes several months after the fact, so to be able to see them first at Cannes with the audience in the venue at the same time, that to me is extraordinary."
Cannes launched yesterday (15.05.13) with 'The Great Gatsby' serving as the opening film.
The festival will run until May 26.
