'Toy Story' will return for a half hour Halloween TV special and Tom Hanks will reprise his voice role as Woody

'Toy Story' will live on with a 30-minute TV special.

The voice cast of the beloved animated trilogy - including Tom Hanks and Tim Allen - have reunited for a new one-off Halloween special called 'Toy Story of Horror', which will air on US TV network ABC in October.

The mini-movie follows the toys, including Woody, Buzz Lightyear, Mr. Potato Head and Jessie, following the conclusion of 2011's smash hit 'Toy Story 3' in which they found a new home with preschooler Bonnie.

Producer Galyn Susman said of the plot: "Bonnie is on a road trip to go see grandma with her mum and the toys are in the trunk. Mum gets a flat tire and they have to spend the night at a motel and all kinds of chaos ensues."

The scary special was influenced by classic horror films such as 'Psycho' and 'Alien', but director Angus MacLane insists producers have done a "good job" balancing the Halloween theme and the family-friendly nature of the 'Toy Story' movies.

He told "There was some support to make a scary, but not necessarily Halloween-themed half-hour 'Toy Story' special for television. There was some concern early on about not making it too scary for kids. I think we've done a good job of balancing staying true to 'Toy Story' and staying true to the genre."
